OUGD403: Design Principles crit on Message and Delivery

Friday 9th November 2012
During this session we got seperated in to two groups, one group placed there three finished posters on tables and whilst they left the room the other group had to come in and write about 3 different posters. This way we could tell this person the truth without feeling worried about what they would think as it was annonymous. I found this a lot easier to write what i thought rather then telling this person as it was more tuthful and same goes for when reading about them. I knew they were the truth rather then a personal attack on you. So this was very beneficial to me.
Below is what was said about my posters by three different people:
What Statement/fact/question is being communicated to you
Student 1-End terrorism
Student 2-  Stop terroism
Student 3- End terrorism
Is this being communicated in a clear and focused way?
Student 1-Yes
Student 2- Yes
Student 3- Yes
What could be developed further?
Student 1- I feel more experimentation could be shown into the layout of type poster and type and image poster. Like how the image poster has been cropped
Student 2-  I think the positioning ot the text needs to be edited, it conveys a clear message, it's just in some areas its hard to decide which word is next to read
Student 3- Perhaps the image could have been played with a little more e.g mixture of the bomb and peace sign.
Have the posters been kept "Simple and to the point"
Student 1-Yes
Student 2- Yes
Student 3-Yes
Is a Statement, fact or question being posed?
Student 1-Statement has been posed on type and type + image poster using type and the imagery used such as 'peace' sign and bomb symbol convey this message on image poster
Student 2-  I believe a question is being posed, the poster asks to 'help' Its also posing a statement i guess by telling you that the war on terror needs to stop
Student 3- Statement. The words and language is an opinion
Has the restriction of two colours been met?
Student 1- No
Student 2-  No
Student 3- Yes
Are the two colours plus stock appropriated to the sollution?
Student 1-Unsure
Student 2- Yes
Student 3- Yes
Why are the two colours plus stock apropriate/inappropriate?
Student 1- I like the use of red for the word 'terrorism' it links in with the idea of danger and is associated with stop- Which is appropriate for 'stop terrorism'
Image and type+image poster used 3 colours and stock
Student 2- The red works really well to portray the violence. the light blue is a nice, calm peaceful colour which calms the whole piece down
Student 3- Perhaps you could have considered your stock, however it hasn't changed the effect of your poster massively. Colours are strong and represent your themes of terror, danger, stop and calmness. Well its very clear also white for peace
Do the posters work as a set or a series?
Student 1-Yes
Student 2- Yes
Student 3- Yes
Why do the work/dont work as part of a set or series and could this be developed further?
Student 1-Pease symbol has been used on each poster and similar colours have been used.
Student 2- They all work really well. Maybe make the image poster more clear ! but I really like it
Student 3-The colours match, the layouts also similar, perhaps should have been the same size e.g column width. Peace sign links them altogether, and peace is the main message.
Is it clearly evident which poster is TYPE, IMAGE and TYPE &IMAGE?
Student 1--Yes
Student 2-  Yes
Student 3- No as both your posters with type on have a peace sign, this is an image but it does link the, all together which is good.
Are the posters "memorable, immediate high impact and clear?"
Student 1- Bold typeface used works well and makes an Impact
I like the layout used on image poster, cropping the 'Peace' symbol is interesting
Student 2- Yes very. The colours are brilliant and really stand out. I think using the word 'fight' should be swapped if your to stop terrorism and violence
Student 3-I think they all are memorable especially the ones with the type. high Impact because of the red and they are very clear
Do you feel the brief has been fullfilled to its full pottential?
Student 1-Yes
Student 2-Yes
Student 3- Yes
Further Feedback:
Student 1-Posters show deep research into the subject
Student 2- Clear and to the point
Student 3- An informed opinion, made a judgement, good colours which are symbolic, typeface is good, except on 'War' it should of all been uppercase as it doesnt match the rest of your typeface.

My Opinion

I am very grateful for these comments as it brought to light somethings i hadnt realised and given me ideas to maybe tweak my designs.
On screen my designs had a grey background which was my stock colour however when i printed them out they came out a pale blue and unfortunatley i didnt have enough time to rectify this, so when it came to the crit it was made clear that i hadnt used the write amount of colours.
Also as said above i used an image in my type poster which i will rectify and take that out for my final pieces.
As brought to my attention i will also re word some of my work as i dont want to promote violence and as a student correctly stated writing the word 'fight' is confusing to the audience as it would seem to be promoting the violence when im wanted to get accross to stop it.
Overall i am happy with my final pieces and pleased with what my fellow students had to say it has really been beneficial to get a truthful opinion on my work and informing me on ways i can improve them.

OUGD 403 Alphabet Soup. Visual Thinking-Visual Communication Group Crit

Group Crit

Alphabet Soup-Visual Thinking, Visual Communication

Friday 5th October

During this session we got put into groups of 11where we showed and spoke about each letter form. Within our group we had a range of people who had different themes and some with the same so it was deffinatley interesting to see how people had taken there word and portray it within there letter form.
Once we had seen every persons letter form within our group we all had to work out which were the best 5 within the set/sequence of ten, and it was interesting to see due to the fact that everyone liked different letter form for various reasons so it was well discussed debate on which ones would be best to choose. Once we had all decided on 5 of each we stuck them on the wall next to a note saying which theme this sequence was portraying. (image above)
Admittedly i didn't really like the next part of the crit as it meant we had to be so judgmental but also had to take into consideration that people were ruthlessly judging your work too and trying not to take offense was hard. In our groups we had to move to a different groups wall of letters and start eliminating each letter and telling the group why we had removed there letter for what ever reason it might have been. We had to stop when we got to 5 letters left. The five we chose were a culmination of different themed letters all done in different styles. As a whole class we told everyone why these were the last 5 letters. Then the hard part was to eliminate it down to one letter form and discuss why that was the last one standing, so to speak.

Personally this was an interesting and beneficial group crit even if it did stung a bit when your letters get taken off the wall quite soon when you have worked so hard and spent so much time on it, but then again this is something that is going to happen frequently in this industry, not everyone is going to appreciate or like your work. From it i learned to take criticism on the chin and work on it for next time.

EVALUATION OF FINAL PIECES

At the time of designing i didn't really want to go for a really obvious approach that was too literate, however it became apparent that i couldn't come up with ten ideas that would all be different and wasn't obvious, which is where i struggled. Therefore i went down the actual shattered route but varied how i did and to different degrees of detail and simplicity. Originally i wanted it to conceptually but i changed it so it would be more visual. Some of my letters are strong an visually interesting which i would be happy with whereas others didn't turn out as well. i had ideas but couldn't represent them as well and lack of time was the downfall as if i had more time id go back to them and re-do them so i was entirely happy.
The Process i did my letters was when i found the font i wanted to use as inspiration i traced around it then incorporated the design in or around the letter. As the letter forms had to be in black and white i mixed it up and used negative space as well to create shapes but for media i used black fine liner and pencil, with the occasional use of a white fine liner pen which didn't turn out as well as i had hoped.

OUGD402 Study task 2- What is Graphic Design-Part 1

Identify 5 Criterias from the list and identify images of Graphic Design that fall into each of the categories

The list of criteria:

-Creative use of Type
-Visual Quality
Tone of Voice
-Intricate details
-Simplicity/Minimalist
-Hidden meanings/Messages
-Interactive/Audience Engagement
-Style/Aesthetic/Visual Quality
-Media and Production
-Format
-Relationship with shapes
-Personal Interest
-Language/Content
-Structure/Layout

The five parts of criteria i have chosen are:

Creative use of Type

Image 1
Niels Shoe Meulman-Dutch calligrapher, graffiti writer and graphic designer

I have a great interest in typography but i also find street art when its done in a sophisticated way fascinating and i think its because its a raw talent and the artists who do it have there own distinguished unique style therefore combinging the two like the images above appeal to me. Also the fact that it isnt done digitaly intrests me aswell because it makes each piece unique and different to anything else. Its laying his talent done bare for all to see flaws and all.

Arcano Type

I chose these images because of the intricate details that has gone into each letter, how each one is different and they are all done by using chinese ink. I find the detail within in them is beautiful and neatly done and it brings out the letters delicacy.

I'd previously researched into tyopography quite a bit but iv never come across work like this before and i find it incredible. Every drip looks as if its been put there with great ease yet i can imagine my self doing it and probably would make a big mess so this piece knowing its taken extra care in it to get it perfect has given it so much more respect and makes me appreciate it a whole lot more.

These images I found are all in a collection together, I originally found part 3 first and i think it was the use of quirky imagery and the old fashioned look of it that really drew my attention. I particularly like the use of all the different fonts and normally having such a big range of different fonts can make a piece look odd however theres really work together.

Image 5

3rd October 2012

I chose this piece because i think its beautiful its soft yet its full of detail, and each part is made up of words which makes it even more interesting and adds subtly and makes it look pretty, you almost get lost in it as they are being blown away.

Intricate Detail

Image 1

ROOTography-Chang Tuck Wah

I chose these images above because the detail in the letters are incredible, although i am not a particular fan of the actual type i like the patterns inside, i like the way they are entwined around the letter and they way its not restricted to the border of each letter it goes over the edge the way roots do.

"Represents social awareness and are endearing to the audience"

I absolutley adore these images i think they are visually making aware certain situations and the detail within the animals fits so comfortably as if its usual to have these on the certain animals. I love the detail and intricate feel you get from these images because they look to be hand drawn and the fact they are in black and white and uses negative space and shades make it look more appropriate rather then having loads of different colours that would make it look too over the top.

How To-Progress Crits- Peer Feedback

Comment on the how clearly the problem has been identified and understood:

Peer 1:

'It's been identified clearly and understood there needed to be some sort of route'

Peer 2:

'I think the problem has been understood- Could it have been identified more precisly by speaking to students.'

Peer 3:

'The problem was clearly identified and easy to understand. The quickest route into leeds has been researched well and the concet of how the directions will be show is well thought out. The project is relevant to students from LCA'

Peer 4:

'Problem:Students getting lost in Leeds. Identified well- Worked out most important route and focused on it. Identified audience (students) problem (lost from town to college) Understood in that they knowhow to discover it. Well identified and understood'

Comment on how well the problem has been analysed and researched:

Peer 1:

'They went on google maps to find he quickest route to use which is helpful, but they didnt do much more research. They could have researched where food places, shops and other important places to go as the final destination because at the moment its Harvey Nichols, which students dont go to and might no know how to get to other places from there. They could have done a questionaire to see if people would post a pictuew of themselves'

Peer 2:

'Would it have been useful to ask some students what kind of route they would prefer.
-The quickest
-Useful route showing useful shopping destinations for students
-'More then one route.'

Peer 3:

'There could have been more research done, also students could have been questioned about other routes and shortcuts that may exist. Ideas were well analysed and the proposed solution will work well.'

Peer 4:

'Researched route to walk and found support info. Analysed way students would walk, how best to deliver info. What to contain info in. How o distribute and promote, how to measure success.  Well analysed and researched.'

Comment on the proposed solution to the problem:

Peer 1:

'They decided to create a route by designing stickers and putting them on lamp posts from LCA to town so students can follow them. They also have a leaflet with directions on a QR colde which links to a blog so people can post pictures of themselves to blog at the destination.'

Peer 2:

'Like the idea of ldea of leaflet/map
Good Logo, Great illustration for landmarks
Stickers on route- Is it realistic that you can put on lamp posts etc.Harvey Nichols- For Students?'

Peer 3:

'The propsed solution is to give direction to the students through a map and sticker combination, this solves the problem in a cheap and easy way.'

Peer 4:

'Very clever solution i thought provide on proper map. Easy to read or follow and pysical so can keep, Visual en route aid in the stickers- something visual to follow and make sure your on the right way- Smart. Link to computer interactivity- Blog means can check success on real the basics. Well thought solution'

Comment on the clarity with which the information was presented:

Peer 1:

'They answered all the questions we asked, and got straight to the point. Presentation of what they were doing and why. They had reasons for all the decisions they made.'

Peer 2:

'Straight forward presentation, answered all questions would have been nice to see the logo/leaflet in colour either on screen or mock up rather then sketch only.'

Peer 3:

'The project was presented clearly, I understood the concept and project solution, all information was covered, however one improvement could be everyone in group has equal speaking time when presenting.'

Peer 4:

'Presented briefly but clearly. Not a massively indepth question so limited to answers but considered answers well and explained the thought process and methods of experimentation.I know what they did and didnt need to have to ask to clarify.'

Any other comments or suggestions:

Peer 1:

'Could an app be more helpful to show different destinations? How will the leaflet be advertised? Is it legal?'

Peer 2:

'Would have maybe chosen a more appropriate final destination for students to end up. Somewhere they would go/shop. Not sure if stickers would stay. Could create an app?'

Peer 3:

'Could create an app so you have the route on your smart phone while walking'

Peer 4:

' Make an app/ Link to maps on the barcode, so its even more interactive. Could put homing trackers of points en route and phone recognizes when the user reaches that point.'

How To...- Self Evaluation

Friday 28th September 2012

What role(s) did you take on in the group ?

In my opinion we all had even roles within our group. We gave eachother tasks to do what we thought would be suited to eachother, and there backgrounds. Therefore i helped design the leaflet along with Grace. Then when needed we all contributed to add our opinions and input to others work and ideas to create and all round piece of work where we all helped and liked.

How well do you think you performed in the role(s)?

I think i performed to the best of my ability and unputted my views and opions to a satisfactry amount.

How well do you think you worked as a group?

I think we worked well as a group, we all took on board what eachother wanted to do and their opinions. There was no arguing ot falling out about ideas or a single person taking over which is always a positive sign.

What were the positives of working in a group?

-More Ideas
-All come from different creative/design backgrounds
-Help eachother do different things which enabled us to learn how to do things which one person knew how to do but then the whole group learnt aswell.

What were the negative of working in a group?

During the week members of the group including me were off uni poorly, however we all pulled together and managed to get everything done that we intended to.

What will you do differently next time?

-Print the Leaflets out more Proffesionally
-Make the symbols into actual stickers
-Have various routes which would take the user to different points
-Maybe look into different ways to do out task rather then choosing the first idea we came up with

Where could you have improved your resolution?

I think we could have improved by researching properly into the tash whcih would then improve it also all make sure that everyone is pulling there weight and making sure that ther doing it to the best of their ability.

What were the strengths of your presentation?

-Well Organized
-Kept it simple with just images
-Everyone knew what they had to say without reading from notes or reading what was on the screen.

Study Task 1 - Why Am I Here - What do I want to Learn? INSPIRATIONS

Identify and explain 5 things that inspire you:

  • Music-  Music is probably an inspiration to most people but the reason it is for me is that no matter what mood your in, no matter how you are feeling there is always a song that represents that. I love the way a song can remind you of something in the past wether its a person a place or favourite past time. I relate this to Art most of the time it can remind of something and even if its not necesssarily about you it can remind you of something completely different which is what i love and find inspiring about it.

  • Fashion- Clothes and accessories and everything involved inspire just like music you can really let your style and the way your feeling on that particular day show by wearing certain clothes. There are some great inspirational designers out there but the designers i find most inspiring are normal people who you see walking down the street that are wearing some amazing outfits by the way they are styled or acccessorized. Thats why i love Leeds theres so many unique personalities and people show that through the way they dress.

  • Digital Art- One of my passions is Digital Art i find it just as breath taking as a hand drawn piece of art. The amount of brillian artists out there producing some amazing stuff that i couldnt even dream of producing is incredible. I aspire to have someone look at my work and think wow the way i look at work. I think especially having technology at the top of its game has allowed artists to be free and create amazing pieces of work.

  • Family - My Family are my biggest inspiration purely because they have always been supportive. Often enough i have been talkign to someone where they ask me what im going to be studying at Uni and i have Graphic Design theyve asked me "why ?" or "where is that going to get you in life" "Thats not a real degree" etc however my family have supported me as its my passion its what i enjoy to do and they've never second guessed my desicion. Which is why i what to do my best and aim for doing as well as i can for them to show that them being so supportive has paid off.

  • Hand Drawings(Art)- Like i said previously pencil drawings i find incredible its either a talent you have or you dont have and its what you do with that talent that makes you so incredible and awe-inspiring. I dont believe drawing is somethng everyone can do i think people either have it or not and its whether you take advantage of that skill that makes all the difference. Ill be the first to admit that im not the best drawer but i love looking at incredible drawings just because as someone who wants be a good drawer i know how difficult it is and they always look like theyve dine with so much ease and no stress. Which is why i find drawing an inspiration
