OUGD502 Design Presence

Below Are images of my final design presence put together along with the presentation I created that took place on the 14th May 2014

I used white card for the folder, and antique white for the cv and resume, the business cards are also made out of a thick white card as well. I went round the edges of the folder and business card with a 18kt Gold leaf pen to add a personal touch.

During the summer I think I would design this again.. The concept is there however although the antique stock looks great with the colours i have used it is a little bit thick which makes the cv and portfolio difficult to pull out with out the fear of ripping !

I feel as if over the last year my confidence has improved massively and once when presentations even the thought would keep me awake for a week straight worrying about them doesn't bother me too much up until I'm actually up there and i begin to get stuck for words. However I feel i have made a much bigger improvement then last year.

OUGD502 Design Presence

Name JOY.. Why?

I chose the name joy primarily because it is my middle name, I didn't want to be conventional and just call myself Sophie Abell, I find that sophie is too boring and common and no one ever pronounces my last name right which has always been an irritation for me as iv got older. Therefore my middle name seemed to be the best.. Also its quite a positive word and I see myself as quite positive and joyous aswell.

Colour Scheme?

ORANGE-- I chose to do one colour which was orange as at the time of making I had all off a sudden out of nowhere started wearing and using the colour orange more then often, maybe it was because i was feeling more summary I don't know but it seemed right at the time to brand my self orange. I also felt that it went well with my name, i can't imagine the word joy would have gone well in a dark green colour that made it look wishy-washy and all doom and gloom.

Above are my two final logos, showing how they would work with the colours reversed. I chose to do a script font mainly because I thought it looks sophisticated, decorative but also not too over the top. I felt that simplicity was key when branding my self.

Below are screenshots of business card layouts as well as using a different logo because i was still experimenting on how it would look. This was before i had come across my final logo design.

Once i had my final logo everything was simple, so below is a mock up of my branding.

In a previous blog post I found a really interesting way to house business cards using folds. As I have furthered my learning on this course I realised that branding and packaging was a huge interest of mine. I also use a lot of different folds with packaging design which I wanted to portray in my project pack, I knew that I didn't want it to be just a folder full of info about me. I felt that sizing was important for my pack purely because after visiting Duke Studios and them telling us how they get so many info packs about people they very rarely look at them unless they visually grab them. Also that they gave a student deigner a work experience because she had made her pack packaging different so I hoped that this would be the same. Also by making it small it allows the designer not to be too intimidated by how much info was in place and that if they were interested they would look further into it as the saying goes 'too long didn't read' also I didn't want to put my self out there that it leaves nothing for the designer to be surprised and shocked about.

I knew how I wanted it to be packaged before I had done any design work, so I started off by creating  prototypes, in a varied sizes, using a3,a4,a5 and a6 but also to practice how to make the packaging

Above is the first pro to type mock up I did, I drew on lines where the folds would take place to make it easier to plan my design around these and also shaded out areas which would be seen.

After doing so this gave me the idea of having an image on the back and then Inside would be a page for my creative cv and another for my Portfolio
Below is the different prototype mock ups of the different sizes on different stock

I then realised that by altering the size this enabled me to fit them into each other which is what I would do with my cv and portfolio page. (below)

Once I had finalised the sizes which I chose A4 because It held the business card nicely I then went on to designing the CV and Portfolio

My cv is relatively simple but I also wanted it to be visually interesting so i created info graphics. Its not only personal but I feel it is true to me.

My portfolio is again simple, I didn't feel the need to over power it with mounds of work because I feel that If they want to see more then they will follow the link or the qr code to see me. I didn't want to reveal all too soon. I also feel as if the designer didn't like my project pack then it didn't seem a necessity to fill it with loads of work. I want to show designers my potential but I didn't want to seem to overly confident and that I am still willing to learn and grow as a designer but as a person too.

for the back pages I decided that I wanted it to be quite personal so I scanned in a doodle I did, it is unfinished so once I scanned it in I took it into photoshop cut it in half and reversed it so it was a mirror image I then used the blur tool to make it quite abstract. I then put my logo over the top so It stayed in the theme. This back page would be on both the cv and portfolio.
Also something that I found when making the project pack I realised that when the folds are being done the pattern on the back (disregarding the text) correlates with each other which I thought was really clever and it wasn't even intentional.

I feel as if iv been really organised with this project I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and try new things so something that i always do is print on white stock and instead I chose Antique white for my cv and portfolio Iv also never printed successfully double sided and it went well !!

I thought about adding in additional posters to my info pack, but I decided to maybe leave them out for now, but perhaps later on I would add these in for another added feature. These posters have quotes and sayings on them that I truly believe :

OUGD502 Design Presence

When thinking about my own design presence I started making a board on pinterest to see how other designers see themselves. I was so impressed by the variety of styles that I came across, some from being simplistic to incredibly detailed even some with gifts. Which got me thinking that it must be important to stand out and be a bit different from the rest, so I wanted to approach it in  a new way to give the designer something to look at and be intrigued by.

Below is a collection of a few that I liked the most:
